"Whether you’ve been writing for eons or have never shared your writing within a group, this experience is not to be missed." - Rachel Carillo, Prompt Workshop Participant
Write Around Portland is offering a special workshop designed for writers and aspiring writers in the greater Portland area who want to participate in a Write Around workshop and support the communities we traditionally serve. Prompt is your chance to write in community with others following the Write Around model while also providing support to writers who might not otherwise have access to writing and community. Registration is limited to 12 adults per workshop (age 18 and over). We are holding two Prompt workshops this spring: Ten Wednesdays, March 4th - May 6th 6:30 - 8:30pm Powell’s City of Books, 1005 W. Burnside Workshop Facilitator: Dawn Thompson (bio below)
Ten Tuesdays, February 24th - April 28th 6:30 - 8:30pm Powell’s City of Books, 1005 W. Burnside Workshop Facilitator: Kevin Fann (bio below)
Cost: $285 Payment plan available. Cost includes free parking, snacks and access to the “Bowels of Powells”
Based on the acclaimed Write Around Portland model, this dynamic workshop incorporates many of our favorite writing exercises designed to inspire the writing life, including freewriting; work with writing elements; strength-building feedback and early-draft revision. The workshop will cap off with a community broadside.
All proceeds go toward funding Write Around Portland programs, including workshops for people affected by HIV/AIDS, veterans living with PTSD, those with physical or mental disabilities, and others in Portland without access because of income, isolation or other barriers.
Wednesday Prompt facilitator Dawn Thompson is a Program Coordinator for Write Around Portland and trains volunteer facilitators. The author of a collection of short stories, Light Looking at Itself and a chapbook of poetry, The Eternal Waltz of Seasons, Dawn has been published in Goliard's Literary Journal, X is for Xylophone and VoiceCatcher. She also has written a narrative photography exhibit about women mystics, Divine Eros, which recently showed in Vancouver, BC.
Tuesday Prompt Facilitator Kevin Fann has written a little bit of everything. His commercial scripts and adverts have appeared on television, the Web, and in print. His technical writing has appeared in things you shouldn’t read. And his literary fiction has appeared in The Vanderbilt Review and The 2007 Wordstock Ten. Kevin has facilitated writing workshops with Write Around Portland for three years. He would rather learn from one bird how to sing than teach 10,000 stars how not to dance. Kevin has a degree in physics and English literature.
