Write Around Portland is offering a special workshop designed for writers and aspiring writers in the greater Portland area who want to participate in a Write Around workshop and support the communities we traditionally serve. Prompt is your chance to write in community with others following the Write Around model while also providing support to writers who might not otherwise have access to writing and community. Registration is limited to 12 adults per workshop. IMPORTANT NOTE: Spaces are filling quickly! Please call ahead (503.796.9224) to confirm there is space before registering online. We are holding Prompt workshops this summer and fall:
Summer Session: Eight Tuesdays, 6:15 - 8:45pm June 23rd - August 11th Powell’s City of Books, 1005 W. Burnside Workshop Facilitator: Sara Guest (see bio below)
Fall Session: Eight Mondays, 6:15 - 8:45pm October 19th - December 7th Powell’s City of Books, 1005 W. Burnside Workshop Facilitator: Margaret Malone (see bio below)
Cost: $285 Payment plans available. Cost includes free parking, snacks and access to the “Bowels of Powells”
Based on the acclaimed Write Around Portland model, this dynamic workshop incorporates many of our favorite writing exercises designed to inspire the writing life, including freewriting; work with writing elements; strength-building feedback and early-draft revision. The workshop will cap off with a community broadside.
All proceeds go toward funding Write Around Portland programs, including workshops for people affected by HIV/AIDS, veterans living with PTSD, teen parents, those with physical or mental disabilities, people living in low income housing and others without access because of income, isolation or other barriers.
Prompt facilitators: Summer Facilitator Sara Guest has a BA in creative writing and an MA in literature. She is editor of VoiceCatcher3, an anthology of Portland women’s writing, and she workshopped fiction at the 2008 Tin House Writers Workshop. Sara is a former speech writer, writing instructor and has worked professionally as an editor for 15 years. She has facilitated numerous Write Around Portland workshops as a volunteer and in her current role on our staff as Program Coordinator.
Fall Facilitator Margaret Malone's writing has appeared in The Missouri Review, Swink, latimes.com, The 2008 Wordstock Ten and elsewhere. She has been a volunteer and workshop facilitator with Write Around Portland since 2006 and is currently at work on a collection of stories and a memoir.
