Dear Friends,

It certainly feels like spring here at Write Around Portland! In addition to the cloudy with a chance of sun weather:

...15 writing workshops are in full swing

...workshop participants--women in drug and alcohol treatment, adults with disabilities, homeless teens and many others--are working hard to prepare the writing they created during the last 10 weeks for our upcoming anthology

...volunteers are signing up right now to help put together a beautiful publication

...and there are plenty of opportunities for you to be involved.

I'm eager to read the powerful writing of participants and excited to share with you in this newsletter what your support makes happen.

                                                                    Happy spring!

Robyn Steely

Executive Director

We're looking for a few good readers, typists and writing enthusiasts

Spring workshop participants are turning in their writing this week! You can play a role in getting their writing published in our upcoming spring anthology.

We're looking for word-loving volunteers to type up handwritten submissions, select pieces for publication, choose the cover design and other tasks that make the book a truly community-created publication.

We'll be running volunteer shifts throughout April, and we hope you'll join us!

Interested? Contact Thomas Cordova at 503.796.9224.

New featured writer courageously doing what she needs to do: Write

The title of Write Around Portland's fall 2009 anthology is More Than a Book. The line comes from a powerful piece called "Courage" by Benita Alioth,  a participant in our workshop for burn survivors through Legacy Burn Center's Burn Concern program.

"Since I've been a burn survivor...I'm doing what I need to do, and that is to write," Benita told us. "The workshop gave me more confidence in my writing and being ale to express myself in front of people." Read more about Benita, her writing and her experience on our website.

"Whether you’ve been writing for eons or have never shared your writing within a group, Prompt is not to be missed!"

That's what a recent participant of our Prompt community writing workshop at Powell's City of Books told us, and we think it's great advice.

Are you interested in deepening or expanding your writing practice? Getting back to writing? Taking a writing workshop for the first time? Learning firsthand about Write Around Portland's community generative writing model? Prompt is for you! Spaces are filling very quickly for our upcoming Prompt workshop:

Ten Tuesdays, April 20 - June 22, 6:30-8:30pm, Powell's City of Books

Cost: $285, payment plans available.

Fee includes free parking, snacks and access to the “Bowels of Powell's."

Pre-registration is required. Call 503.796.9224 for more information and to register.

There’s no need to be jealous of Steven. Sign up to be a monthly donor by April 15th and you'll get your very own Write Around Portland tote bag!

Write Around Portland’s monthly donors are a special bunch. Together, they bring the power of writing to more than 40 workshop participants each year. Be a part of the club and get the tote bag to show off your membership!

As little as $5 a month provides journals, pens, bus tickets, snacks and an anthology, making a huge difference in the lives of workshop participants like Anna, a middle school student, who told us:

“I love to write and this workshop gives me the time to do so. I'm very excited to have my writing published in the Write Around Portland book!"

Right now a $5, $10 or $25 monthly gift through your debit/credit card, will allow someone living in poverty to know that they are worthwhile, to feel like their words matter, that they matter. Click here to give a gift as vital as any other you could give, especially right now.

Carry your books, journal, magazines (and maybe some groceries, too) in your very own Write Around Portland totebag like the one flip-flop-wearing volunteer Steven Skoczen carries when you become a monthly donor before April 15th.
