Each spring and fall, Write Around Portland publishes an anthology that features the powerful, personal writing of participants from our free community writing circles.
For participants, submitting their work is more than just an exercise, it’s often their first experience being treated as an author, with their voice honored and their words in print.
Volunteers play key roles in preparing the anthology for print and distribution. Tasks for bringing together the book vary from reading and typing handwritten pieces to serving on the Selection Committee, where they read, discuss, and vote on submissions.
Jan Hall, a Selection Committee volunteer, shared her experience:
“Participation in Write Around Portland’s writing selection this spring was very interesting and rewarding for me personally. It was a great investment of my time, and I look forward to hearing about more volunteer opportunities as they come up.”
Anyone who believes in amplifying unheard voices can make a valuable contribution to our work and have a lasting impact with just a few hours of their time.
