In August, we wrapped up our summer facilitator training and we are excited to send our new volunteer facilitators into the city to helm writing groups throughout Portland. These 11 volunteers spent the month of August investing 27 hours into mastering how to conduct our creative writing classes in-person and online.
The training is a deep dive into best practices and nuanced skills necessary for successful facilitation. Facilitators learn how to craft imaginative writing activities, orchestrate the flow of a session, offer positive feedback, introduce essential writing elements, and nurture a supportive, empowering space for every participant. Their dedication helps bridge together communities within Portland, inviting more people to write, share, and grow together.
After completing their training, the facilitators were matched to Write Around Portland writing groups with agency partners throughout the Portland area. Since that time, they have been getting to know their participants, fostering connection and — most importantly — getting lots of writing done!
In addition to our community writing groups, some of our facilitators will be at the helm of our creative writing classes throughout the fall and into winter. We are offering many Freewrite writing circles, Resonate writing circles, and Prompt writing groups in-person and online. These classes are open to the public and you can participate in many of them from the comfort of your own home.
Our next facilitator training starts in January 2026 and applications will open toward the end of the year.
